Typically, officers are initially assigned to the Patrol Division upon completing their initial training as a police recruit. Officers work one of three shifts: 1st Watch (night shift) from 9:30 p.m. until 7:30 a.m.; 2nd Watch (day shift) from 7:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.; or 3rd Watch (evening shift) from 4:30 p.m. until 2:30 a.m. This schedule allows for an overlap between shifts, particularly during the night time hours when, not only hour activity level tends to increase, but the severity of activity increases also. Each officer works 40 hours per week with four days on duty and three days off duty. This schedule does not include special assignments, court appearances, or many other activities required of our officers.
